July "WONG Notes"
I'm starting this months article in Washington, DC, home of the Washington Opera. They will spend the month of July in Japan on tour. Mrs. Domingo will be remounting SLY and I will choreograph it again. The company hasn't been on tour in 17 years, so I'm really proud to be a part of the 200 members that will be going. We will be bringing the full orchestra, sets, costumes and staff for 3 operas. The 3 Tenors are already there singing at the World Cup and the company will join 2 of them in Tokyo. Domingo will sing OTHELLO and Carreras will sing SLY. We all wanted Pavarotti to sing TOSCA but we were told he had other commitments. Hey, working with 2 out of the 3 TENORS ain't so bad for a little girl from Chinatown. Well, you never know where I'll show up next month. Stay tuned. Now for our monthly chat. |

FOUND: ROBERTA STIEHM (Bebe-National) lives in Maryland, teaches Ballet at the MARYLAND YOUTH BALLET SCHOOL and has her own PILATES studio.
RACHAEL SMITH MURRAY (Val- Nikko Tour) who covers, got to go on for Mary Magdalene in my production of Jesus Christ Superstar in Munich, Germany. Her reviews said "she sang and acted the role with her soul." Congratulations, Rachael. She will be doing a little sight-seeing in Europe with her new husband before they return home. MICHAEL GORMAN (Bobby-B'way) writes he is playing Rooster in ANNIE in Colorado, and just finished up an industrial film for Intelenex and he is "playing the asshole boss." Michael writes "can you imagine that"? Michael it's Work, you're the only one that works all the time. We are all moving to Colorado. Move over! GARY STEVENS (Author of The Longest Line) wrote in to say he will be Bi-coastal as of June. Also his ACL collection of Cassie costumes has grown and he picked up the marquee sign of ACL from the Schubert in LA. The theater has been torn down for offices. We are hoping Gary will be contributing to the site and sharing some of his great memories of the show. Welcome back, Gary. By the way, Gary was in the original production of Merrily We Roll Along when he was a kid. MATT JOHNSON (Zach-Nikko Tour) is now living in Maryland, near Chevy Chase. We had diner in Bethesda, a cute town that has over a hundred restaurants. Matt relocated last year and is still dancing but has found a new profession. He is really doing well as a DISC JOCKEY. He plays for Weddings, Bar Mitzvahs, Sweet 16's, and anything you can think of. He had me rolling in my sushi, laughing at the stories and situations he has had to endure during his short career. I asked Matt to send us a few of them. But he says no, we'll have to buy the book. Remember ROBERTA STIEHM (Bebe-National)? Well, while I was doing preproduction for the Washington Opera with my assistant Mimi Legat at the Maryland Youth Ballet School, there she was. Our Bebe, she has two kids, lives in Maryland teaches Ballets and has her own Pilates studio. So is there a life after ACL? PILATES! We heard from MICHELLE SCARPE (Diane-Nikko tour) she's happy in St. Louis performing in a production of SWEET CHARITY. HOT OF THE PRESS: LORI MARSHBURN (Cassie-Nikko Tour) has just gotten engaged on July 8: to Catalin Neagu also named Nick. He presented her with a 1 ct. princess cut diamond. She'll have two dates one for a wedding in North Carolina and the other in Vegas for a few of their friends. So we all Congratulate you Lori. Best Wishes for a Happy and healthy Life. Keep us posted on all the activities . LUIS VILLABON (Paul 2001 Tour) Will be away from New York for a while. He's going out on the National Tour of SEUSSICAL,The Musical with CATHY RIGBY. He's proud to be playing WICKERSHAM, BROTHER #1. We'll miss Luis in his role in NAKED BOYS SINGING. I'm sure it will be there when he gets back. Received a July 4 greeting from ROBERT TUNSTALL (Bobby-2001 Tour) he says he is in final tech for CRAZY FOR YOU. He's at the theater most of the time but has found time to go across the street to visit with MICHAEL GORMAN (Bobby-B'way) who is in ANNIE. Robert says Gorman has made his experience in COLORADO more worthwhile and wishes all a Fan "kick" tastic summer. COLLEEN HAWKS (Judy-2001 Tour) sent us a photo of her and her co-star JEFF PIERCE, who plays her CURLY in OKLAHOMA. Not only are they singing but they are dancing too. Colleen says Jeff is strong and they are doing some wonderful choreography with lots of adage lifts. Click here for the photo of the two of them. Got an e-mail from J. ELAINE MARCOS (CONNIE-Visa tour) she is out playing Liat in SOUTH PACIFIC and will start rehearsing in August with the Broadway production of FLOWER DRUM SONG. After endless auditioning she got a phone call from the director himself to let her know she had the job. CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!! and may you have a long run. Heard for ZOIE LAMB (Connie-National) She was on the other side of the table on KING AND I at Paper Mill. After it opened she directed a reading at the NYU GRADUATE Musical Theater Program. On a more serious note Zoie says she knows now, how much she loves directing. She learned during King and I that she knew more than she thought she did. Also sitting in on the remounting of ACL 2001 Tour, Zoie say "it was very emotional on so many levels, so many years of my life, CONNIE IS ME! " And soon she will be Mark Hobee's assistant on MISS SAIGON at Paper Mill. Zoie is making that transition from performer to Director. It's tough but she's doing all the right things. We all who have been down that road wish her well, all the luck and lots of work to come. Got a great e-mail from SYLVIA RHENE (Maggie - Vienne) She hasn't been heard from since 1987. She let's us know for the past 10 years she has been performing CHRISTINE in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, in one country or another and she has loved every minute of it. The past 2 years has spent some down time in the states. Recently divorced, Sylvia says she is back and very happy. She has just finished a fabulous production of JEKELL AND HYDE in Connecticut and is now doing FOOTLOOSE in West Virginia. She says, she watches those kids dance with a jealous eye. ACL has spoiled her. PHILIP MICHAEL BASKERVILLE (Richie- National) call to say he was back from his 6 month tour of JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR in Europe. We hear he was a huge success as SIMON and tore the house down when he went on for JUDAS. I'm sure he'll rest for a while, cause those one nighters can be hard. Heard from RON GUNIERE (PSM -Nikko Tour) his niece and he were looking up famous people's names on the web. She logged in her uncle's name (she thinks he's famous) and up pops a photo of him at 24 yrs old in a local production of HELLO DOLLY at the Concord Players in Massachusetts. Here's the site for all his friends to see. http://www.concordplayers.org/PastProd/HelloDolly.html Ron is still on tour with FOSSE. Wrote our RANDY CLEMENTS (Zach- Everywhere) to find out what he was up to. He's always busy at his theater. He writes, he just finished up with MUSIC MAN and the critics thought he was miscasted as Harold Hill. Randy writes "can you believe it, I was born to play Harold Hill" However, his Labrador was in the production and he, of course, got good notices. He'll start his summer season with STATE FAIR and end it with CRAZY FOR YOU. Randy says at his theater he is teaching the apprentices the "One" combination. They still can't believe he knows Donna McKechnie. He's had to bring in programs with their names on them to prove to them. Hey, Randy I still can't believe I've worked with her. CHERYL CLARK (Cassie- B'way) writes," I just saw DONNA McKechnie last night in FOLLIES and she was Brilliant - she in her red dress- coming down that staircase, singing "I'm Still Here"- I seriously don't have words to express how fabulous she was, and meaningful.....also her dancing was Gorgeous.........And Grover Dale his style and dancing- those 2 were worth the price of the ticket and beyond. Donna, her face, body dialogue, all that she did was beyond fantastic. Kay Cole's work was excellent as always-I've seen a lot of things she's done out here. DEBBIE GEFFNER (Kristine-B'way) was in the audience with her daughter, mother and husband. We had a blast talking during intermission." Thanks Cheryl we love hearing from you. MATT WEST (Bobby-Film) wrote to let me to let me know he will be taking his mother and sister to Rome in August. Matt just got back from Brazil said he was having to much fun down there with assistant Moria Chapman staging his BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. ROBERT TUNSTALL (Bobby-2001 tour) our New York reporter writes:
Thanks Robert for all the news. Well, I'm finishing up this months article under the giant bronze Great Buddha in Kamakura, Japan. An hour away from Tokyo the Gardens that surrounds this enormous figure is so peaceful. Have taken some of my dancers on a day trip by train and how wonderful it is to share such an experience. I remember the first time I saw the Big Buddha. I was walking in the gardens and all of sudden it was there facing me like a giant smiling friend. So for this month I sign off in Japan, home of sushi, temples and tranquility (outside of Tokyo). |
